Production Manager - Hudson, New York

Fern is a small American contemporary design studio based in Hudson, New York (90 miles north of NYC) with a strong focus of creating heirloom-quality furniture, lighting and objects. In our own studio and working with talented fabricators – our goal is to put forth work that meets the highest standards of craftsmanship. We work with a network of interior designers, architects and private clients to build really cool pieces on a made-to-order basis, often incorporating bespoke details for unique one-of-a-kind pieces.

Fern is looking for add a production manager to our team who shares the same passion we do for design and craft. We are seeking a highly motivated individual that would be responsible for planning, coordination and managing workflow within our company. This person will work between management, our skilled staff, and outside vendors to improve upon and maintain the highest standard of American craftsmanship within our industry.

Location: Hudson, NY

Hours: 32-40 hour flexible work week depending on candidate and workflow

Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Key Responsibilities:

• Plan and monitor workflow among our skilled artisans in the construction of wood furniture.

• Optimize scheduling to continually improve performance and efficiency while maintaining high standards of craft.

• Work closely with vendors (metal fabricators, CNC operators, etc.) to maintain client lead time schedules and implement new strategies to fabricate in-house parts.

• Maintain a production schedule working with staff to ensure all goals are met.

• Coordinate shop drawings for client approvals and for staff production.

• Track raw materials (primarily lumber) for inventory and coordinate maintenance of wood machinery.

• Have the ability to expertly build furniture, including a strong knowledge of joinery and all modern & classical woodworking equipment.

• Create shop drawings in Autodesk Fusion that are followed within the company for production, and shared with clients for approval prior to production.

• Coordinate with management on scheduling for shipping completed work.

• Maintain quality control standards to maintain design and safety standards.

• Manage a small staff of 5-10 furniture builders of several skill levels.

• This position requires physical labor and candidates should be comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs. and being on their feet a large portion of the day.

Candidate Profile:

• A minimum of 7+ years of furniture construction experience with strong team management skills

• Leadership skills that translate well with management and staff with a mindset of continual improvement

• Proficient in reading and articulating shop drawings

• Proficient in creating shop drawings (not required, but preferred) within Autodesk Fusion or similar software program

• A diverse craft background is desirable not only in wood working, but also using other materials. A strong interest in art and design is beneficial.

• Excellent organization and communication skills
